Is The Changeling Trash or Treasure?
Blu-ray Distributed By: Severin Films / August 7, 2018
Peter Medak’s classic ghost story THE CHANGELING has been out of circulation for years on home video but now looking better than ever in a new HD transfer created from a 4K scan of the inter-positive film element.
It is perhaps the most chilling supernatural thriller of our time. It remains a career peak for star George C. Scott and director Peter Medak (THE RULING CLASS, THE KRAYS). Now the film that Martin Scorsese calls “one of the scariest movies ever made” finally comes to Blu-ray: Academy Award® winner Scott delivers “one of his greatest performances ever” (BloodyGoodHorror.com) as a Manhattan composer consumed by grief after his wife and daughter are killed in a shocking accident. But when he moves to a secluded Victorian mansion, he will find himself haunted by a paranormal entity that may unleash an even more disturbing secret. Trish Van Devere (THE HEARSE), two-time Oscar® winner Melvyn Douglas (BEING THERE) and Barry Morse (ASYLUM) co-star in “one of the most unsettling ghost stories ever” (IFC.com), winner of 8 Genie Awards – including Best Foreign Actor, Best Foreign Actress and Best Canadian Film – and based on actual events.

Video (3.5 / 5)
Cigarette burns (reel change marks), scratches, blemishes, and other anomalies litter the image throughout. But it still looks better than any DVD or VHS that has come before. It’s the best the film has ever looked at home, but still far from perfect.
Audio (4 / 5)
Blu-ray comes with 5.1 surround mix, 2.0 stereo, and an audio commentary. All the disc needs is the 2.0 mix, which translates the spooky house noises perfectly. The 5.1 mix is unimpressive and feels mostly redundant next to the 2.0 stereo mix.

Jamie’s Post Review thoughts: I watched the special features, they were okay but nothing too compelling, which makes sense as that’s how I feel about The Changeling. I especially don’t give two shits about what Mick Garris thinks. Did you listen to the commentary at all?
Jimbo: I’m a fan of the special features. I thought there was a lot of interesting information. And I only sampled the audio commentary, but what I heard I liked very much.
