Is Sex World Treasure or Treasure
DVD Distributed By Vinegar Syndrome / May 12, 2015
Sex World is a luxury resort, advertised as the ultimate sex-themed getaway, where people travel to try and overcome their sexual problems. As the resort’s guests slowly become aware of their inhibitions, fears, and repressed urges, with the help of robotic surrogate lovers, director Anthony Spinelli’s camera paints a haunting picture of human insecurities set against a science fiction backdrop.
One of the biggest hardcore hits of the late 1970’s SEX WORLD is a thoughtful analysis of eroticism, punctuated with striking and at times abstract visuals. Featuring an all-star cast, including Annette Haven, Leslie Bovee, Kay Parker, John Leslie, Joey Silvera, and with Hollywood level production values, SEX WORLD remains one of the most significant and thought provoking hardcore feature films ever produced.
Vinegar Syndrome presents this genre classic newly restored in 4k from the original 35mm camera negative, featuring brand new interviews with its talented stars.
Jamie’s Take (4 / 5)
Now this is an adult movie! An actual plot, jokes, hilarious dialog, shot on film and not shitty video, decent acting (shocking) and an absurd ending…yeah Sex World is an adult film for the whole…well, it’s for those…shit I don’t know, degenerates like myself. Yeah, that works.
Released in 1977, Sex World is a parody of the science fiction films Westworld and it’s sequel Futureworld in which people pay a hefty price to go to an amusement park setting and participate in their desires and dreams like being a cowboy or on another planet. But in Sex World I think one can get the idea what they are in for as couples and singles take a bus ride to an amusement park of their desires where they can fulfill every sexual fantasy they may have that they do not get at home.
While the film is humorous and I often laughed at some of the over the top dialog (“Fuck. Pussy. You can say whatever you want to me.”) Sex World may have been a great idea for a steamy R rated Hollywood film as the premise is relatable and one we all can identify with and would want to travel to. Who wouldn’t want to go to Sex World??? However, unlike Westworld or it’s sequel where things go wrong, Sex World is simplistic as everyone gets what they want and changes for the better. There is no real danger in Sex World. Like a massage parlor, everyone gets a happy ending.
Shockingly, and I gotta point this out, aside from the interesting premise, the film is actually well made and yes, the actors do their best and are quite good. Any scene with John Leslie is great. He plays a rich bigot who gets seduced by a black woman whose desire it is to make love to a racist. This is both hilarious and shockingly over the top as some of the things he says and what she says to him in return may not go over well with the “snowflake generation.”
I also really think Leslie Bovee is drop dead gorgeous. I have reviewed a few of her films in the past and she’s not only a good actress but I think her “girl next door” look is quite bonerlicious.
The DVD by Vinegar Syndrome offers both the XXX version as well as a softer R rated version which omits pretty much everything. Not sure what the point of that is unless you a pussy and afraid to see some nice fucking. Either way, go with the longer cut. It does go on a bit too long but is still a decent adult film, much better than anything you would see now.
Sex World is enjoyable as it does show men and women wanting to not only please their partners but themselves, participating in all sorts of debatchuary (voyeurism, inter-racial sex, lesbieanism. rough sex, oral, etc.) and pleasures. Sex World may be the first adult film I have seen in years that I thought could arouse viewers even today.
I loved seeing the interviews with some of the actors who worked on the film, especially Kay Parker’s interview as this was her first adult film and was so nervous to make the movie, as well as tell her father. It is a bit strange as they are the same age as my parents, talking about their past career but it is insightful with some great stories. Sex World is also available in a limited blu-ray / DVD combo as well but the special features are only on the DVD strangely enough.
Oh yes, one last thing…the ending…it’s kind of bizarre and soooooooo 70’s and creepy, it felt like it was from a different movie. Completely odd but I think it added another half a can to my rating by keeping with the homage to Westworld.
