A young woman takes a vow to become a nun for the rest of her life. This is the 28th volume in the Nikkatsu Erotic Films Collection. These are typically enjoyable trash, but this time promises a Japanese take on nunsploitation. I am more used to Eurotrash cashing in on that odd subgenre, so I was intrigued to see what an Eastern take on the material might be. Would it be less, or God forbid, more trashy?

The first things I noticed was the look of the film itself; both a little darker than usual but more noticeable was this was shot in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. I kind of wonder why the switch, but at least Impulse does address the film quality in a small box of text on the back cover. As for the plot, a young nun takes her vows at a convent, and it takes a whole five minutes before there is some nudity in the form of topless self-flagellation. The mother superior is dealing with a painful stomach condition that won’t go away, and a priest is roaming the halls dampening nuns’ habits as well as fooling around a bit. The nuns have lots of rules, and you better not break any of them or else corporal punishment ensues.

For example one nun ends up pregnant, so she gets strung and lashed, forced to drink salt water, has hot candle wax dripped on her pubis, ending in a forced abortion. Look out Italy, we might have a new nun trash queen in town!

Basically, troubled girls get shipped to the nunnery where they might cause embarrassment to their families. Since they aren’t exactly committed to the cause, there is plenty of misbehavior and lesbianism. There is also a subplot around test taking for cram school (no, not THAT type of cramming) and potential scoring irregularities. One of the few actual decent nuns leaves to visit the sick mother superior, and she is rewarded by getting gang raped. No good deed goes nun-punished. She confesses the incident to the priest, who then rapes her. If you think she is better off escaping, there is a black hooded gang that will kill you if you try to leave.

Throw in some incest, suicide, and fratricide, this title is pretty bleak compared to others in the series. I’m not saying I didn’t like it, just don’t expect some of the soft core naughtiness and goofy tone found elsewhere.

This release is really bare bones, but even with the dark image this is still worth watching.
