Is Revenge of the Living Dead Girls Treasure or Trash?
Blu-ray Distributed By Severin / July 28, 2020
In 1987, Parisian pornographers Pierre B. Reinhard and Jean-Claude Roy deviated from their usual high-end skin fare to instead create un cassoulet d’atrocités that remains most extreme French gore film in history: When a trio of vixens is killed by corporate-tainted milk, their nubile corpses will rise from the grave for a Jean-Rollin-meets-RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD orgy of depravity that DVD Drive-In calls “a fetishistic ode to blood, breasts and brutality.” Severin Films is très fier to present this long-unseen “grimy rhapsody of deviance” (Bleeding Skull) featuring graphic splatter by doomed FX master Benoît Lestang (THE WAX MAX, MARTYRS), now remastered in HD and spurting with all-new Special Features.
Jamie’s Take (3 / 5)
If there ever was a film that could possibly make Joe D’Amato wince, Revenge of the Living Dead Girls could possibly be that film. It’s been awhile since I wanted to take a shower after seeing such a sleazy flick and well, Revenge of the Living Dead Girls is pure trash with a capital T. It’s gross, sleazy, over the top, and purely ridiculous. Most of you will hate it due to the graphic violence and misogyny (not to mention the cryptic storyline and numerous characters) but those of you who are depraved and enjoy a sick flick and enjoy a good shock…well your ass is in for a treat.
In a tiny French village, a local company is illegally dumping toxic chemicals to save money. These chemicals are somehow polluting the milk supply in the town which causes the death of three young women. The company that caused this pollution is run by the biggest scumbags who would will sell their soul just to make a buck, with various characters who work for this company blackmailing one another. But when the three women come back from the grave to get revenge, all hell breaks loose and soon money just isn’t everything as these zombie women mutilate everyone in their path.
There is just too much going on with so many characters being introduced and then forgotten about (or killed out of nowhere) that the film just comes off as batshit. Now don’t get me wrong: I love batshit. Batshit can be good but this is boring batshit that just confuses and bores. The movie does pick up the pace as it goes along and actually with maybe 30-45 minutes left in the film, it really moves along and gets quite gruesome and over the top. For an 82 minute movie, this French goreflick should have been much quicker paced and entertaining. Not sure why the script is loaded with so many subplots and various characters but whatever it’s all French to me (sorry I had to)!
The man behind the makeup effects is Benoit Lestang who created the effects for The City of Lost Children, Brotherhood of the Wolf and the underrated Martyrs (I will argue that’s one of the best horror films to have come out of the 2000’s). Lestang’s makeup effects here are not quite as polished or realistic but I rather enjoyed the over the top grue that splatters on the screen. In fact, it reminded me of the type of effects that would appear in early Peter Jackson films like Bad Taste and Braindead. While I don’t want to give away all the best moments, lets just say that private parts do not fair well in this film and pay the price. It would be hard for any gore fan not to feel a little sick or off put during the “baby” scene where a soon to be mother has her own deformed baby rip out of her vertical smile. The French must hate genitals.
Oh and the ending…holy shit it makes really no sense and had me laughing out loud but also annoyed at what a dumb idea it was to have this “twist”. It doesn’t work at all. But there are plenty of “what the fuck?” moments (a secretary pulling out her French flappers, rubs her big nips and then puts her milk puppies away may be my favorite moment) that it may as well end in such a strange manner since the movie is so bizarre to begin with.
Severin’s blu ray looks pretty damn good with just minor print damage and speckling here and there. The fact this film has never been released on home video in the U.S. until now, I cannot complain. There isn’t as many special features on the disc as I would have hoped for with just a few interviews (one sadly with Lestang which must have been an old vintage interview since he committed suicide in 2008) but again, is it really a big deal since we now have Revenge of the Living Dead Girls finally in HD?
I know this one isn’t for everyone and I am sure some of you may have already stopped reading, knowing you would never see such a movie. I get it, it’s pretty brutal and not for the faint of heart. But one thing is for sure: Revenge of the Living Dead Girls is not forgettable and will leave a lasting impression on those brave enough to give it a shot.
